Vazhaikkai Podimas is an easy side dish prepared in Tambram houses. In Tanjore cuisine, Raw banana and Brinjal are the most revered vegetable. Podimas is the most quick and easy side dish that can be made out of vazhaikkai. Given the nuances involved, it is prepared mostly at home only. Here is an authentic recipe for Vazhaikkai Podimas.
- 2 Nos Raw banana/Vazhaikkai
- 1 Tbsp oil
- 1/4 Tsp Mustard/Kadugu
- 1/4 Tsp Split urd dal/Ulutham paruppu
- 1 Nos Green chilli Chopped
- 1 Tsp Ginger Peeled and grated
- 1 Spring Curry leaves/Karuveppilai
- 1 Tbsp Kothamalli leaves/Coriander leaves Chopped
- 1 Nos Lemon Squeeze juice
- 1 Tsp Salt
Cut raw banana into half (horizantally) and pressure cook for 3 whistles without adding water. Allow it to cool and peel skin. Once cooled, gently break the cooked banana into tiny pieces.
In a kadai, heat oil. Add mustard seeds to splutter. Shallow fry split urad dal till golden brown. Add ginger, curry leaves and chopped green chillies and shallow fry in oil.
To this add the cooked raw banana, add salt. Cook in low flame till the ingredients blend. Switch off the flame. Squeeze lemon juice on top and garnish with coriander leaves.
*Lemon adds tanginess to the dish. Hence do not skip.
*If you like onions, shallow fry onions in oil before adding raw banana pieces.
*Normally lemon, green chilli, coriander leaves and curry leaves goes together.
Vazhaikkai Podimas – Step by Step instructions
*Pressure cook raw banana. Peel and cut into small pieces.
*In oil, crack mustard seeds along with split urad dal. Add ginger and chillies. Add cut raw banana and fry them together.
*Season with squeezed lemon and garnish with coriander leaves.
