Sweet potato tikki is an easy, nutritious, guilt free snacks that I make for my kids. Sweet potato has exceptional Vitamin A content and is loaded with many vitamins and trace minerals. I cook these in tawa instead of frying making them less oily too. Sweet potato tikki is one of the easy snack you can prepare for your children as a post school snack. In the northern part of India, this tikki is served as one of the fasting (Vrat) day dish.
I had at home nowadays to support my son in his exams. Mom being at home means only food to my son. In the coming days, I would try to post many such healthy snacks to kids.
- 500 grams Sweet potato
- 1 Nos Medium sized Onion Chopped finely
- 1 Nos green chilli Finely chopped, optional
- 2 Tbsp Coriander leaves Finely chopped
- 1 Tsp Salt Adjust to taste
- 1/2 Nos Lemon Extract juice
- 1 Tsp Red chilli powder
- 1 Tbsp Dhania powder
- 1/4 Tsp Garam masala
- 4 Tbsp Oil
Boil sweet potato in a pressure cooker till fully done. Add sweet potato in a inner vessel and cook without adding water. Sweet potato will cook in its own moisture. Adding water would turn potato mushy. Let the sweet potato cool down so that you can peel the skin. In the mean time chop Onion, chilli, coriander leaves and keep ready.`
In a tawa add a spoon of oil. Add chopped onions and chilli. Saute till raw smell disappears. Peel potatoes and mash when it is warm. To the potatoes, add cooked onions. Add coriander leaves, dhania powder, garam masala, chilli powder, salt and lemon juice.
Mix all ingredients except oil and make small balls out of it. Heat tawa and spread oil on tawa. Flatten the balls and arrange the balls in the tawa. Sprinkle oil and cook till sides turn golden brown. Turn the tikkis carefully and cook the other side also in low flame.
Serve hot with pudina chutney or tomato sauce.
*You can add dry mango powder in place of lemon juice.
*You can add grated ginger along with onions.
*If you are serving with tomato sauce, you can add few leaves of pudina along with coriander leaves.

*Pressure cook sweet potatoes without adding water and peel skin.
*In a kadai, add a Tsp of oil and saute onion, ginger and chillies till raw smell disappears.
*Mash sweet potatoes along with cooked onions and other ingredients except oil. Mix well and make small balls.
*Place the balls in tawa and cook on both side till they turn golden brown.
*Serve hot with tomato sauce or pudina chutney.
