Green chutney from Saravana bhavan hotel is one of the most wanted side dish at our house. Whenever we pack and get tiffin item from hotel, my sons would ask them to pack green chutney instead of coconut chutney. It tastes awesome with curd rice as accompaniment.
After many failed attempt, my sister perfected and share this with me. Here is a perfect recipe for fluorescent color green chutney.
- 1/2 Cup Coconut Shredded or pieces
- 1 Tbsp Channa dal/Kadala paruppu
- 3 Spring Curry leaves/Karuvepillai
- 1 Tsp Salt Adjust to taste
- 1 Tsp Oil
- 1/4 Tsp Turmeric
- 1/4 Tsp Mustard seeds
- 1 Nos Green chilli
Heat oil in kadai. In low flame fry channa dal till it is golden brown. Switch off the flame. Add chillies and curry leaves and saute in the heat of the oil itself. That heat is sufficient to remove the raw smell.
Grind coconut adding water little by little till coconut leaves its sweet water. This step is important. Add fried channa dal along with curry leaves, salt, green chilli and turmeric and grind till it becomes a smooth paste.
Temper with mustard seeds and serve.
Green Chutney-Step by Step instructions
*Heat oil in a kadai and fry channa dal in low flame till golden brown. Add curry leaves and green chilies in the oil. Cook in the heat of the oil by switching off the flame.
*Grind coconut, curry leaves, chillies, salt and turmeric to a smooth paste. Temper and serve. Turmeric gives it bright green color. Tastes awesome with Idli, Dosa and curd rice.
